Is It Safe to Give an Expense Tracker App SMS Permission?
SMS-based expense trackers are the easiest way to track spending in India — every bank sends an alert for every payment. But to read those alerts, the app needs permission to read all your SMS. That deserves a careful look.
What SMS permission actually allows
When you grant "Read SMS", the app can technically read:
- Bank and card transaction alerts (what it needs)
- OTPs for banking, UPI, logins and deliveries
- Personal messages
- Messages from your telecom operator, government services, and more
Android only grants this permission to apps that Google approves for it, and finance/expense tracking is an approved use. But approval doesn't tell you what the app does with the data.
The 5 questions to ask before granting it
- Where are messages parsed — on your phone or on a server? On-device parsing means your messages never leave your phone. Cloud parsing means they (or data extracted from them) do.
- Is the raw message text stored? The safest apps extract amount, merchant and date, then discard the original text.
- What does the business model depend on? If the app also sells loans, credit cards or "personalised offers", your spending data has commercial value to it.
- What does the Play Store Data safety section say? Scroll to "Data safety" on the app's Play listing. Check what is collected and what is shared with third parties.
- Does it work without the permission? A good app offers a manual mode so SMS access is optional, not forced.
Red flags
- Vague privacy policy ("we may use your data to improve services and offers")
- Loan or credit offers appearing inside the expense tracker
- No way to use the app without SMS access
- Account sign-up required before you can see any feature
What "on-device" really means
On-device processing means the code that reads and interprets your messages runs on your phone's processor. The results are saved locally. Nothing about your transactions is sent to a server for parsing.
You can partly verify this yourself: turn on airplane mode, receive or re-scan a transaction SMS, and see whether the app still captures it.
How Fidaura handles SMS
Fidaura was built around these questions:
- SMS parsing is fully offline — it runs on your phone
- The raw text of a message is never stored and never leaves your phone
- Your data lives in an encrypted database on your device
- Encrypted backups use a passphrase only you know
- No analytics SDKs, no data sale, no loan pushing
- Manual mode works without any permissions
- Fidaura is free and supported by ads — and the ads never see your money data

FAQ
Can an expense tracker read my OTPs? With SMS permission, any app can technically read them. That's why on-device parsing and not storing raw messages matter.
Is SMS permission the same on all Android phones? Yes, it's an Android system permission. You can revoke it anytime in Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions.
Is manual tracking safer? Yes, but most people stop after a week. On-device SMS parsing gives you automation without uploading your data.
